HOT STONE MASSAGE
Hot stone massage is a medium that utilizes smooth, heated basalt stones and a combination of Swedish and deep tissue massage—employing Effleurage (gliding strokes), Petrissage (kneading), and Friction to gradually warm the muscles. The stones are then used to work specific muscle groups and acupressure points along the body and may be positioned along the client’s spine, in the palms of the hands, along the legs, and around the feet and toes.
In many ways a hot stone massage session is similar to any other type of massage; the difference is the change in temperature and the hard, smoothness of the stones which are the perfect tools to powerfully work tight muscles. The stones are heated (usually to about 130°F or 34°C) prior to the client's arrival and basalt stones are used because they have a rich iron content which retains heat. Massage oil is spread on the client's body and the stones are worked over the body’s surface.
The use of stone massage can be seen throughout history and all over the world. From aiding digestion to reducing menstrual pain, massage using cooled or heated stones has a tradition dating back at least five thousand years. Today it is often used to relax tense muscles, increase circulation, aid in pain relief, increase lymphatic flow, promote deep and restful sleep, and reduce stress, anxiety, and depression.
